I’ve been watching movies for the past weeks, yay!

He’s Just Not That Into You. I’ve been waiting for this movie since last year! Of course there had to be some reason why I scoured the country (yes, the country) for a copy of the book… until I finally found one in SM Muntinlupa!– That was how desperate I was to read the book last year, or at least that’s was how much I needed some sense to be knocked into me… :P Anyway I was expecting the movie to be a tearjerker, and I even made a schedule to watch it with Bea since this was, after all, our 2008 movie. I didn’t like it that much! It was a hodgepodge of stories and everyone just really had to be connected to each other in some way (hence the six degrees of separation rule applies here)– Jennifer Aniston was with Ben Affleck, who was Bradley Cooper’s friend. Bradley Cooper’s wife was Jennifer Connolly, who worked with Ginnifer Goodwin and Jennifer Aniston. Bradley Cooper had an affair with Scarlett Johansson, who was friends with Drew Barrymore, and was Kevin Connolly’s love interest. Kevin Connolly was roommates with Justin Long, who ended up with Ginnifer Goodwin, while Drew Barrymore ended up with Kevin Connolly. Phew! Small world! Haha. Anyway I didn’t really like it at all and I was expecting much more… I think the movie didn’t really need an all-star cast to catch some attention and in a way the mix of the cast was good but everyone just ended up having minor parts. And though I was able to relate a bit, I wasn’t jumping for joy or crying because it totally applied to me…

You Changed My Life. I won’t be running to the cinemas and lining up for this one, but it’s a feel good movie nonetheless. Sarah Geronimo’s kabaduyan totally made me squint but I was laughing at the same time at how corny it was! Don’t mention how Miggy (John Lloyd) and Laida (Sarah) call each other and how Sarah was just so kilig with everything, ugh! Kinda unbelievable though, the mix of the uber rich bachelor and the ordinary struggling office girl… gives people some false hope in my opinion. Hahaha, mean! Regardless though, this movie was okay. I watched it with Liel and Jen before going to Mark’s party last night to kill time– and it was worth the 175 bucks naman. At least people weren’t gushing too loud in Rockwell or else I would really have felt super baduy, hehe! Oh and Sarah’s hair… like a dead raccoon, yech!

Next movies on the list: Slumdog Millionaire. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I’m currently watching Vicky Cristina Barcelona!

Of course I wouldn’t let the hype die down without knowing what the fuss was all about– and now just having come home from watching the movie I’ve now got something to say about it ;) My only advice: watch the movie first before reading the book, since if you don’t then you’d be expecting that the movie will do the book some justice. Unfortunately it doesn’t (but that’s since I didn’t listen to my friends and I read the book first), but the movie is fairly okay in itself. It runs a bit dry and monotonous for the most part, but Edward Cullen and his romantic lines make up for it… maybe that’s what the fuss was all about?! Haha. No but really, there is just something about those romantic male characters that make you fall in love with them/ their character, just like Shane West as Landon Carter in A Walk To Remember, right? But anyway there really isn’t any climax to the story and it runs flat so you’d just be rooting for the love story then. I feel like I watched a longer episode of One Tree Hill/ The O.C., especially during the prom part…

As to the acting, it was dry as can be with a lot of talking, but like I said, Robert Pattinson as the hot, romantic, protective vampire Edward Cullen made up for it. Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan was okay, also the rest of the actors except for the one who played Rosalie Cullen. The character’s supposed to be the prettiest female on the planet but she didn’t do the character any justice at all. Oh, and the ending credits where they just had to introduce each actor really didn’t fit into the entire movie. It let out mixed signals– you wouldn’t know if it was romance, drama, suspense or thriller, with the mix of the music, humor, and treatment of the beginning and ending credits. It just wasn’t as dark as I expected, or maybe because I was expecting it to be Harry Potter-like. Nevertheless it’s a good movie (being the hopeless romantic that I am)– I loved hearing the lines and can only wish upon such love story for myself :P– worth 170 bucks. Hehe. I think I wanna watch it again for Edward Cullen’s character!

I downloaded the soundtrack weeks before I saw the movie and I must say the songs are quite nice and fitting. I especially like “Flightless Bird, American Mouth” by Iron and Wine, which was played during the prom scene. I suddenly got to appreciate “Leave Out All The Rest” by Linkin Park as well. Anyway good movie, good soundtrack. And a hot Edward Cullen. Haha. I think I’ll watch it again :) In the meantime I’ll be starting on New Moon and reading the other books soon!

What happens in Vegas

June 12, 2008 1 comment

I watched this on the last full show today with Rex at GMall. It was a nice movie! Absolutely not heavy but not a chick flick as well. Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher actually look good together. I’m gonna spoil it… the characters Joy and Jack meet one night in Vegas, then hit it off and get married. When Jack wins 3 million dollars in the slot machine, things get ugly as they try to settle the dispute in court and get a divorce. They’re ordered by the judge to work out their marriage or else the money will be frozen, so the two of them try to live together, try to do crazy stuff to one another to get out of the marriage, but eventually… well you know the ending, they fall in love.

My verdict? O O O ( –> aka 3.5 stars :)

———-

Movies here in Davao are so cheap that I wanna start doing a movie marathon every week! Tickets cost only 75 bucks, man! I don’t watch too much TV and DVDs are just gonna add to the bulk of my things so it’s not a bad idea to catch all the movies in the theater as they come out. I’m looking forward to watching Prince Caspian and The Incredible Hulk this weekend!

———-

I have a grand gesture in mind. A big plan. I want to do it but some have warned me of the intrigue it will stir up. On the other hand, some have called my attention for worrying too much about what others will think. Stop giving excuses and just do it if I want to, right? After all, it’s that basic foundation that comes first. Basta, I will update more about my grand gesture as I plan it… it’s a bit cryptic for now but I’ll reveal more soon. :)

———-

Some “bad news” was broken to me today. It’s not very bad news for me and I wasn’t expecting any good news after all. It’s just that the person who broke it to me was a bit emotional and heartbroken about it since he felt he led it on. Nah, no worries. It’s not something I absolutely want, and with things going the way they are… I’m not even sure about myself anymore.

Good that it’s Friday tomorrow. Weekend!!!

Because I’m home AGAIN on a Saturday night…

April 12, 2008 Leave a comment

… and I’m tired from studying Logistics the whole day today (I actually just started at lunch and then slept for 2 hours after lunch)…

I saw this movie “Little Manhattan” (from 2005) on Star Movies today while I was having my Mr. Chips + Yakult breakfast (I know, eeeek, unhealthy! I haven’t done my grocery shopping yet!). Anyway it’s about two 11-year olds who find love in New York City. How young to find love, haha! The main character’s this guy called Gabe who falls in love with his kindergarten classmate and karate sparring partner Rosemary, and when he eventually musters the courage to tell her how he feels, it’s just too late since she’s off to summer camp. Cute movie, lots of nice quotes to get from it, such as this one:

Suddenly, I knew what I had to do. Love isn’t about ridiculous little words. Love is about grand gestures. Love is about airplanes pulling banners over stadiums, proposals on jumbo-trons, giant words in sky writing. Love is about going that extra mile even if it hurts, letting it all hang out there. Love is about finding courage inside of you that you didn’t even know was there.

Hahahaha. Here I am again. Aaaaanyway. Here’s what I did the rest of the week since we got our PBVPs last Wednesday:

On Thursday it was my officemate Tetet’s birthday and we had free lunch at the office– paella, sweet & sour pork, barbecue, and chicken. Yum! Made me miss Mom’s cooking even more, my Mom makes a mean paella! And I miss my salpicao!!! Huhuhu!

In the evening I went to SM with Rex to go shopping for toiletries while he blasted his bonus on shoes. I spent like Php 1200 man! POOF! I didn’t know grocery shopping could get so expensive, I mean I just bought shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and a couple of other non-food stuff. Yikes! Hopefully that stock lasts me for more than a month from now!

We then ate at Banok’s– I had the liempo barbecue, which was just like Php 40! I swear, the food here in Davao is absof*ckinglutely cheap but well worth the price for what you’re paying… or is my “taste” just deteriorating/ or am I settling? I hope not, I don’t think so! It actually even seems cheaper to eat out as long as it’s this cheap than to go through all the trouble of cooking at home…

And their buko halo-halo dessert was nice. It was only Php 50! No pic of it though, but it was served on a coconut… and I spilled it all over me when I tried to pour the milk out! Yikes! (2nd time such a mess happened, last time I was out with Rex in Shakey’s and the waiter spilled soup on me!)

On Friday me and my officemates were supposed to play badminton in the evening but we were too busy with work, so we just went to Chili Chill along Torres, had dinner and some beers, and went to Rizal for videoke at Gimik Barkada KTV– Php 100 lang per hour! The place was dirty and had no class at all but that was an OK price for videoke, the songs are the same anyway and are even newer than K1, which charges triple the price (but it’s a nice place naman). The not-singles left at 12 so it was again me and Rex who abused the mic until like 1:30! Haha! Was good to stretch my vocal chords man, I was singing like crazy.

Anyway so I’m home tonight and I don’t feel like going out anyway. I didn’t know I’d eventually get tired of it, or at least to want to take breaks from all the drinking and partying. Besides it’s only the same people I’m with and the same people I see every weekend so I can sacrifice having to stay home to miss out on it. And work was quite tiring too, was busy the whole week with this new Lean Quote Pricing in Sales, and next week will be even worse! My boss’s boss assigned me to do this study that’s due this Friday, and hell I don’t know where to start! It’s a good thing though since I’ll get to use my report-writing skills again, (I should be used to it from college!) and show them that I’m up for the challenge of delivering that report in a short span of time. I’m scared though, I will need to do a lot of things for this!!!

Good thing our Summer Outing’s next week already, yayyyy!!! We’re going to this resort in Samal Island called Hof Gorei for an overnight trip. Lots of things to look forward to for the next weeks including quite a lot of visitors & trainees at the office from MCC (our sister company), and then the next week (and weekend), Cy for some systems training and hanging out over the weekend, maybe with Mark too for another systems training the day before. I’ll be happy again :) And that week for sure, skipping Urban Club on a Saturday night is NOT an option! ;)

Movie marathon

I finally have a DVD player! I haven’t had one since I got here two months ago, so I haven’t opened any of the DVD series I brought from Manila– One Tree Hill Season 3, Grey’s Anatomy Season 3, Hip Hop Abs, and the ABBA Videography. When I went to Ruins last weekend I then bought 7 DVDs– Across The Universe, Love In The Time of Cholera, Dan In Real Life, Mad Money, 27 Dresses, Juno, and Step Up 2 The Streets. I’m finding it exciting to go home to watch movies every night… after busy months of doing the last MISE assignments! Anyway, these are the 3 movies I’ve watched so far…

Monday night: 27 Dresses and Juno

Rex joined me in my apartment to watch these two movies… we used up almost all my food supply and had an impromptu slumber party!

27 Dresses wasn’t bad at all! In fact, I loved it! I loved Katherine Heigl’s “pathetic” character as a bridesmaid who finds herself planning her sister’s wedding to none other but her crush– her boss! She meets this guy Kevin, a wedding writer, who chances upon her filofax at one of the weddings… and the story unfolds from there, don’t wanna spoil it! Lots of things are happening in the movie and it was a bit unpredictable… which is good. Perfect chick flick!

One of my friends was against me “wasting my time” on Juno, but it was actually not bad too. The story is about a 16-year old girl who gets pregnant and puts her baby up for adoption. The main character Juno seemed arrogant at first but you’d actually like her as you go through the movie– her character delivers witty, practical remarks.

Tuesday night: Step Up 2 The Streets

So, as if my friend Cy hasn’t pushed me enough to watch this one… it’s an okay movie. The dance sequences are really good, but it’s very predictable. Anyway just appreciate the dances but don’t expect a story with much substance. Hehe. I like the soundtrack– with the songs Is It You, Low, and Can’t Help But Wait among the songs. Cool!

So what’s up for the next nights? Gotta get the popcorn ready I guess…

I can’t actually wait to see Love in the Time of Cholera– I haven’t read the book though! Oh, and these are movies I’m definitely waiting for this year…

Mamma Mia, most especially! Can’t wait for July! :)
